What is the Radix Endeavor?

MIT's Education Arcade and Scheller Teacher Education Program received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop an immersive virtual learning experience supporting high school math and biology instruction. Working collaboratively with teachers, we have created The Radix Endeavor, a multi-player online game set on the Island of Ysola.

Research Pilot

Thank you to all who participated during the 2014-2015 school year. There is no research pilot currently underway but the game and all corresponding resources are still available. We invite you to use it with your students at any time.

Getting Started

Here are a few steps to begin your journey:

  1. Create a user account. Click on "Play Game" at the top of the page and select "Register an Account."
  2. Select "Teacher," complete the form to register for an account

Visit our Getting Started section for more details.

Teacher Accounts

When you first register as a teacher, the system creates an Un-approved Teacher account to start. Un-approved Teacher accounts will not display the Dashboard menu option. These accounts will be reviewed by Admins to be confirmed and approved. Once approved, you will see the Dashboard feature after log in. Please note that it may take up to 48-hrs for an unapproved Teacher account to be reviewed and approved. An unapproved Teacher account still allows you to play the game right way!

When your account has been approved, you will see a Dashboard link after you log in. There are many Dashboard features, including:

  • Teacher Resources: Additional resources to guide you through the curriculum that The Radix Endeavor provides to help you plan lessons
  • Create/Manage Class: Organize your classrooms and students, create students' accounts within each of your classrooms
  • Reserve Class Time: Plan ahead to ensure that all your students in one class can play on the same instance, to collaborate with one another

Curriculum

Our first version of the game will cover a variety of topics in middle and high school curriculum. It is designed to align with the Common Core standards in mathematics and Next Generation Science Standards for high school students. In addition, we are placing particular emphasis on including opportunities for students to develop key math practices and 21st century skills.

  • Biology topics: Genetics, Ecosystems, Evolution, Human Body Systems
  • Mathematics topics: Algebra, Geometry, Statistics

Assessment & Teacher Tools

Teachers can use the quests as formative assessments of students’ content knowledge. Once a teacher has logged in with an approved account, you will have access to a “Teacher Dashboard” that allows you to assign game content, track participation and performance at both the students' individual and class level. The goal is to help teachers monitor student progress and tailor their lessons to students’ needs.
